   Second shift, 1:00-9:00 PM

 

 

JOB SUMMARY - Maintains good public relations with customers and the general public.  Answers questions and provides assistance to general public.  Installs, disconnects, services and repairs utility equipment for customers in accordance with approved service orders.  Checks for gas and water leaks while on customer's premises.  Works sets and checks meters to insure proper working order.  Makes up weather head for service.  Performs meter-reading functions when necessary.  Responsible for the collection of past due accounts for all utility services.  Cuts off service of past-due accounts when necessary.  Insures services remain disconnected until account is paid.  Maintains assigned truck, tools, and supplies.  Must be capable of following standard operating procedures and working without close supervision.

Required Certifications and Licenses - Valid Alabama's driver's license and good driving record.  Ability to be insured through City of Athens/Utilities vehicle insurance.

 

Education - High School Diploma/GED; Technical School courses preferred

 

Experience and Related Job Knowledge - Experience as a meter reader.  Knowledge of gas, water, and electric meter operations.  Strong basic mathematical skills.  Ability to collect cash, make change, and properly account for money. General vehicle maintenance skills. Technical and mechanical knowledge and skills to repair meters. Ability to learn utility operations. Knowledge of rate schedules. (Can be acquired on the job.)  Strong verbal and written communications skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with citizens, co-workers, supervision. Physical and mental ability to perform all essential job functions.  Ability to work non-standard hours, shifts, overtime, and weekends as needed.   Ability to be on-call as required.  Ability to perform standby duty.  Must have a telephone.  Must live within reasonable driving distance.
