Position:  Meter Reader                                   Department: Customer Service

Classification: Classified, Grade 6                   Pay Range: 12.17/hr – 16.28/hour

JOB SUMMARY - Maintains good public relations with customers and the general public.   Insures exceptional customer service in the field.  Reads meters on assigned route monthly including electric, gas, and water service.  Reads active and inactive meters. Records consumption.    Insures that meters are working properly.  Changes out electric meters if not functioning properly, if glass is broken, or if there is a problem with the dial.  Reports any outside lights burning all the time. Reports meters that are on but not listed in handheld computer and verifying if meter needs to be pulled and marked tampering or if new set exists. Reports water meter or gas meter problems to appropriate department.  Completes route timely with minimal supervision to insure billing can be completed on time. Assigns new account numbers.  Coordinates maintenance on trucks.  Performs routine maintenance on meters.  Responsible for maintaining truck, equipment, and supplies.  Assists Service/Collectors as needed with sets and removal of meters.

Required Certifications and Licenses - Valid Alabama's driver's license and good driving record.    High School Diploma/GED; Technical School courses preferred

 

Experience and Related Job Knowledge - Knowledge of gas, water, and electric meter operations preferred.  Strong basic mathematical skills.  Ability to collect cash, makes change, and properly account for money. General vehicle maintenance skills. Technical and mechanical knowledge and skills to repair meters. Ability to learn utility operations. Knowledge of rate schedules. (Can be acquired on the job.)  Strong verbal and written communications skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with citizens, co-workers, supervision. Physical and mental ability to perform all essential job functions.  Ability to work non-standard hours, shifts, overtime, and weekends as needed.   .
