The Athens Fire and Rescue is headquartered with Station #1 in the Municipal Building on 201 North Marion Street. Station #2 is located at 22060 Medical Village Dr., and Station #3 at 1211 Lucas Ferry Road. The Strategic location of the stations, along with the well-trained staff of fire fighters, allows the City to maintain a Class 3 rating for insurance purposes. Stations are fully manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Athens Fire & Rescue provides the following emergency services to City of Athens residents.
- Structure Fire Suppression: All aspects of structure fires from Search and Rescue, Ventilation and Suppression of fire to Salvage and Overhaul.
- Vehicle and Machinery Fire Suppression: Over the road vehicles to farm machinery
- Alarm Activation: AFR responds to commercial and residential fire, water flow, carbon monoxide and gas detector alarms.
- Medical Calls: AFR currently provides First Responder Emergency Medical Services in Athens City limits.
- Hazardous Materials: AFR provides first responder response for Haz-Mat calls in Athens and Limestone County.
- Other Incidents: AFR provides response to situations such as Odor Investigation, Utility Lines down, Spills and others as necessary.
Athens Fire & Rescue provides the following non-emergency duties.
- School Visits: AFR Firefighters visit Athens City Schools and make age appropriate fire safety presentations.
- Day Care Visits: Firefighters visit area day care centers and provide presentations.
- Community Service: Programs are provided for various community organizations.
- Station Visits: Various community organizations and youth groups arrange tours of the AFR stations.
- Apparatus Maintenance: Firefighters provide routine maintenance and restocking of apparatus.
- Station Upkeep: Firefighters are responsible for general maintenance and cleaning of stations.
- Hydrant Flow Test: Firefighters check flow capacities of water mains throughout the city.
- Pre-Planning: Firefighters familiarize themselves with structures in city limits to identify potential hazards and risks to be better prepared in emergency situation.
- Commercial Building Inspections: Fire Prevention Bureau in conjunction with Athens Building Department provides Code Enforcement inspections for all commercial structures.
- Training: Firefighters in the various ranks participate in various training classes and professional development classes to prepare themselves for the next level of service.
- Burn Permit Inspections: Officers of AFR provide burn permit inspections to ensure compliance with city of Athens Burn ordinance.
